LG TV This app will now restart to free up more memory
This post describes how to fix the error "This app will now restart to free up more memory" which can occur when using apps such as Netflix on an LG TV after just a few minutes of use.
Resolution
To resolve the issue, unplug the TV then press the on/off button for 10 seconds. Wait a further 20 seconds then plug the TV back in and turn it back on. Apps should now run without the error.Edit: The on/off button on my LG TV is directly under the standby light on the bottom of the TV.
Edit: I didn't have to do this myself but one person who has left a comment said that clearing all browsing data worked for them. I have written a post explaining how to do this: LG TV Clear All Browsing History Data.

Edit: A few other people have also suggested turning off quick start in settings (and if it's already off, turn it on then off again). I have written a post explaining how to do this: LG TV turn off Quick Start in settings
26 May 2020 - having the same problem and the above solution works.
ReplyDeleteThank you It worked
DeleteIt's worked for the last 30 minutes
DeleteI just tried the first fix. Seems to be working after an hour!! Many thanks.
Delete28 March 2022 - First solution worked. Other sites suggested it but I couldn't find the on/off switch until I saw here "Edit: The on/off button on my LG TV is directly under the standby light on the bottom of the TV." I was about to buy a new TV. Thank you very much Howard!!!
DeleteThanks for the reply. Happy to help!
DeleteUnbelievable, how a company can get away with such a fault
DeleteI have to do this every time I use my tv it is not a permanent fix for the problem.
ReplyDeleteThis was a permanent fix in my case. Please let me know if you find a permanent fix in your case and what that fix is.
DeleteThis fix worked for me.
DeleteNot working
ReplyDeleteWhich on/off button
ReplyDeleteOn my TV, the on/off button is located to the right of the screen, on the side, as you face the screen.
DeleteI tried this on my LG 82 inch tv but issue is still persist.uninstalled all smart apps which comes with TV .it still popup even using fire stick every 2-3 hours once.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the information Sudhakara. Please comment again if you find a solution on your LG 82 inch TV and I will update my post.
DeleteI have a 55, had the same issue only with Netflix for the past couple of months... Prime is fine.... I just unplugged mine...only one button on the TV itslef, that I can find, directly under the centre of the screen, held it in 10 seconds, turned the TV on then off again held the on / off on the remote 10 seconds, back on now since I've began typing this and netflix seems fine.. Hail hail to the gentleman.. Good luck
ReplyDeleteLG should resolve this problem . No excuse.
ReplyDeleteYou are right, and almost a year later, the problem isn't solved. Neither has LG developed the app for dplay, as they promised back in 2017. I'll never buy anything from these arrogant people again. It will be Samsung.
DeleteSamsung is worse.
DeleteIt's really bad it occurs with even a NEW LG TV, I tried and till now it seems to not have worked but will observe and apply also the other advices ... I think the best will always remain SONY !!!!
DeleteNo problem with mine since.
ReplyDeleteThis did not resolve my issue. The bios was definitely reset. Also if I try to access LG settings while an app is running it will happen guaranteed.
ReplyDeleteReady to trash this TV. Nothing but connectivity issues. I will never buy another LG product again.
ReplyDeleteSwitch off quick start in your settings , if it's off then switch on then switch off . That works on lg televisions
DeleteThis is the solution for me this time. Some of the other solutions had worked previously, but had failed when I could access Netflix yesterday. This turning of quick start in settings, unplugging the TV for 10 seconds, and holding the power button on the remote control seems to have done the trick... finally! Feel like I am going to have to do that all while standing on my head and balancing the remote control on my nose the next time. Honestly... why isn't this issue fixed yet??!?
DeleteIt's not a 'permanent' fix if you have to do this every time. Happens to me on Disney+
ReplyDeleteI only had to do this once and the problem has not occurred again for me. Please post back if you find a permanent fix in your case.
DeleteHoward, I appreciate the info, but in my case it does not work either. I'm using a 42-in LG that's about 2 years old. The wireless portion went out in about 6 months. It hasn't worked since. I'm not using any kind of Netflix or cable or anything, just digital rabbit ears. I tried the "hold the on button for 10 seconds" method, and it worked until I restarted my TV. I still have to do it every time I restart. I'm with the other poster, never again will I buy another LG product. Garbage.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear the fix doesn't work for you Everlong. Please do post back if you find an alternative solution!
DeleteWorked for me, thank you!
ReplyDeleteWorked for me thanks...
ReplyDeleteI am having the same problem with the memory with sling tv.as far as the wifi goes i had that problem also and had to take the back of the tv off and un kink the wifi connection now wifi is fine.but have not been able to fix the memory issue.mine is an LG 60 inch smart tv.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.support.com/how-to/how-to-fix-out-of-memory-error-on-an-lg-smart-tv-10770 I just tryed this and so far this is working for my memory issue you might try this.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this. I've added it to my post.
DeleteI have cleared the cache as the LG support recommends to clear the cache and it doesn't work Very frustrating when trying to watch items on other apps.
DeleteThis is so incredibly aggravating! I have to do this 2 or 3 times a day everyday! I'm not using any of the apps on the TV, just regular satellite channels through DirecTV!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear that. Please do reply if you find a permanent solution.
DeletePress the swich on off under the tv until the tv restart.then enter to the menu and disable quick stàrt from the settings of tv
ReplyDeleteThanks Theo.
DeleteGo to settings turn off quick start , if it's off turn on then off. This has sorted out the free up memory message 👍🤸♀️🤜🤛
ReplyDeleteThanks. I've added this to my post.
DeleteLG TV, I've unplugged tv and pressed on/ off button I've done this several times, problem persists. Going to try the quick start procedure.
ReplyDeleteI just did all three. Unplugged and held on/off, cleared the cache, and turned off quick start. Fingers crossed! This TV has been just find for the 5 years we’ve had it, this is the first issue I’ve ever had. I will definitely buy another LG. I appreciate finding this fix. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteUnplugged tv, waited 30 sec then plugged back in and viola! Thanks Mr Simpson!
ReplyDeleteUnplugging the TV and pressing the power button for 10 seconds worked, the issue was fixed. This process evidently resets the memory of the TV, thereby allowing apps to run properly again. *Please note: For the LG 49UH6030, the power button is located along the bottom edge of the TV in the center of the TV. You have to feel for the button, you won't be able to see it. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteNone of these recommendations helped my TV. YouTube app restarts about every 30 minutes.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the information DJ. Please do post back if you find a solution.
Deletei did the same procedure but still has the same problem when i use the lg smart tv youtube app. Netflix app on lg smart tv does not have this issue. which makes me puzzle.
ReplyDeleteone more thing to note is that i did a factory reset to set the lg smart tv to remove all previously installed app. the funny thing i found out is all the apps are removed but the memory size still show previous installed memory size. meaning when i have all the app installed the memory size is 4.2GB out of 4.49GB. after factory reset it is still 4.2GB out of 4.49GB.
Feedback to LG but they simply just give an unacceptable explanation.
Hope you guys here have found the new solution.
Worked for me but I'll be keeping an eye on it
ReplyDeleteI did a factory reset so that all the app will be removed and thus memory capacity will be back to where i first bought. But i was surprised that even thought i did a factory reset. the memory is the same as all the apps are being installed. Meaning factory reset does not free up memory space. I think LG needs to do something about this memory issue.
ReplyDeleteCheck my solution on below comment. It work with me
DeleteThank u seems to be fine now
ReplyDeleteNo problem, glad I could help.
DeleteIt was a bit tricky for me to find, but turning off Quick start seems to of worked. If I don't update then it worked.
ReplyDeletePress settings on remote.
Select "all settings"
Select "General"
Select "Additional Settings"
Toggle "Quick Start" to off position
I also turned "Live Plus" off not sire of that helps or hurts but my shows are playing g on Netflix again.
Hope this helps the ones like me that need their hand held to find what we are searching for.
I could use a break down of how to clear the browsing history if some is so inclined to assist.
Thank you. I have now written a separate post explaining how to turn off Quick Start https://howardsimpson.blogspot.com/2021/08/lg-tv-turn-off-quick-start-in-settings.html
DeleteI have also now written a separate post explaining how to clear the browsing history https://howardsimpson.blogspot.com/2021/09/lg-tv-clear-all-browsing-history-data.html
DeleteJust the turning off Quick Start solved the problem for me. I've got a 55" LG 4k that's probably ~2 years old.
ReplyDeleteSame issue raised with me but all consumers need solution
ReplyDeleteThe on/off button on my LG TV can be found directly under the standby light on the bottom of the TV.
ReplyDeleteit worked - thanks.
ReplyDeleteBeen longing for a solution to this problem - thanks so much.
I just unplugged for the 20 sec then plugged back in. My TV is mounted into a wall and I sn't get to the button. It has worked for 1/2 hour. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteMy problem start with the wifi not working then the app restart of memory error, I made all the above solutions but didn't work, but i tried something else and it work fine till now. I opened the back of the tv and unplug all the sockets and clean all parts from dust especially the wifi and the motherboard and clean well all the sockets. Now the wifi is work again and no restart happen since a week. Hope it could help you aslo
